EN 1092-1 pressure–temperature ratings

Annex G of EN 1092-1:2018 gives maximum allowable pressures at temperature for a selection of EN flange materials. This page transcribes the parts most often quoted in enquiries: the PN 16 table for non-austenitic groups, the P245GH (group 3E0) row across every PN from 2,5 to 400, and the PN 16 table for austenitic and austenitic-ferritic grades.

Every value is a maximum allowable pressure PS in bar gauge at the temperature in the column heading. At the reference temperature RT — the band from −10 °C to +50 °C — the value equals the nominal PN. The standard also caps PS at PN, so a table cell can never exceed the flange's PN number. A dash means the published table gives no rating for that group at that temperature.

The printed annex is a normative selection for common materials, not a limit on ratings or on materials. For a grade outside the selection, Annex F gives the calculation route: PS = PN × f_t / 140 MPa where strength is time-independent, or PS = PN × min(f_t; f_CR) / 140 MPa once creep governs, with the result rounded down to one decimal place. Strength values are interpolated linearly between adjacent temperatures above 50 °C; do not extrapolate past the last printed temperature. At elevated temperature, any additional external loads must be reduced in the same proportion as the allowable pressure.

PN 16 — non-austenitic material groups (Table G.5)

Table G.5 on page 116 lists 19 group and thickness-band rows. Values in the shaded cells at 450 °C and above are italic in the printed standard because they rest on 100 000 h creep rupture strength; the remaining cells are time-independent.

Read across the row that matches both the material group and the vR thickness band of the part being supplied — the same group can have two or three bands with different values.

Values are maximum allowable pressure PS in bar gauge at the temperature shown. RT is the reference-temperature band, −10 °C to +50 °C, where the value equals the nominal PN. Decimal commas are reproduced exactly as printed (13,3 = 13.3 bar). Cells shown as — have no printed rating for that group and thickness at that temperature. Italic/shaded cells in the standard are based on 100 000 h creep rupture strength.

P245GH (group 3E0, material 1.0352) — PN 2,5 to PN 400

P245GH is the forging grade used in the standard's own marking example and belongs to group 3E0. Reading one row across Tables G.2 to G.13 shows how the same material derates at each nominal pressure. The row transcribed is the vR ≤ 50 mm band; each source table also prints a separate row for 50 < vR ≤ 150 mm.

The ambient column reproduces the nominal PN exactly, which makes this a useful sanity check when a datasheet quotes a rating: every value at RT must equal the PN number.

Values are PS in bar gauge for material group 3E0, thickness band vR ≤ 50 mm, taken from the 3E0 row of each PN table. Decimal commas as printed. The 450 °C row is creep-based in the standard (italic) and is the last rated temperature for this group. A separate row for the 50 < vR ≤ 150 mm band is printed in each table and is slightly lower at some temperatures.

PN 16 — austenitic and austenitic-ferritic stainless steels (Table G.18)

The stainless tables in Annex G.3 are also built per PN, but with one row per material number rather than per group. Table G.18 covers 1.4307, 1.4311, 1.4301, 1.4541, 1.4550, 1.4404, 1.4401, 1.4571, 1.4462, 1.4948 and 1.4941 at PN 16.

Austenitic grades hold their strength better than carbon steels at moderate temperature, but most cannot sustain the full PN much above 500 °C; duplex 1.4462 keeps the full PN 16 only to 250 °C in this table. Read down the material number actually offered, not the generic group label.

EN 1092-1 pressure–temperature ratings — questions

What is the maximum pressure of a PN 16 flange at 200 °C?

It depends on the material. For PN 16 and the common P245GH (group 3E0) forging in the vR ≤ 50 mm band, Table G.5 gives 13,3 bar at 200 °C; the 50–150 mm band gives 12,4 bar. Austenitic 1.4301 (11E0) is rated 11,9 bar and 1.4404 (13E0) 12,7 bar at the same temperature.

Which material group is P250GH?

P250GH (material number 1.0460, EN 10222-2) belongs to group 3E0 — unalloyed steel with guaranteed elevated-temperature properties. P245GH (1.0352) is the same group; P280GH (1.0426) is group 3E1.

Why does the allowable pressure fall with temperature?

The rating scales the nominal pressure by the material's nominal design stress at temperature. Annex F uses PS = PN × f_t / 140 MPa, or PS = PN × min(f_t; f_CR) / 140 MPa once creep governs, rounded down to one decimal place. That is why a PN 16 P245GH flange is 16 bar at RT but 5,2 bar at 450 °C.

Can I interpolate between the listed temperatures?

Yes. The standard interpolates the strength values linearly between adjacent temperatures above 50 °C, which is why the Annex G columns switch to 10 °C steps above 450 °C. Do not extrapolate past the last printed temperature, and do not apply a group's rating to a grade that is not in that group.
